From reading you want to cover that kaowool because it apparently can release fibers when heated. With the refractory cement you want a thin coat, so it will look like it got the kaowool wet, which is ok as long as all the kaowool is covered. So I rebuild my forge every so often (really not all that often don't have too much time to forge right now). The more I use my pain tcan forge the more the lining breaks down, but that is ok because I buy enough to replace it a few times. I replace the kaowool and satanite in my forge every so often. If you use satanite or ITC 100 like someone else said don't go thick. Otherwise, set it aside in a relatively dry location and wait a few days. If you are in a hurry, set your forge on your propane or charcoal grill and cook it for an hour or more. Until all of the water is driven off, your forge temperatures will suffer. If your forge is still only a few days old, it could still have water in it. The other thing that could be happening is moisture. I'll leave it up so that you can learn from my mistakes.
